Will ESPN make LPGA MIA?

March 24, 2010

The LPGA Kia Classic tees off tomorrow morning and my biggest concern is not with the event itself, but with the news coverage, specifically, ESPN.  When hockey (remember it used to be a major sport) left ESPN, ESPN decided it  was no longer a sport. When ESPN started carrying NASCAR, they decided NASCAR was a sport and even started producing a daily half hour long show devoted to a sport they previously covered in “notes” format. As a passionate fan of the LPGA I want to see coverage expand , not contract. We shall see which happens starting this weekend.

Ladies' Masters?

March 18, 2010

This article in USA Today Got me thinking. Why not have a ladies’ Masters the week after the men? It would have to be held back to back for the member’s consideration.  It would be a magnificent promotional boost for the LPGA and people love seeing Augusta. It is our collective idea of heaven as golfers, and those who may not be inclined to watch an LPGA event may be tempted to do so, simply because it is Augusta.

Reason 3,462 not to live in New York City

March 17, 2010

NYC Muni nightmares continue. Pelham has been open for week, but they do not deem it necessary to put out drinking water or ball washers. Why would you when you have suckers like myself willing to pay $35 to walk a course nowhere near in operable condition with no bunker rakes out, and foliage that fell in September filling said bunkers? A friend of mine and golf mentor has a theory that New York has diminishing returns after age 25; his theory is correct. When you add in the golf variable the only solution is to relocate ASAP.

True Courage

March 16, 2010

You will see in the sidebar today a nice little retrospective on Babe Zaharias.  All of last year when people were going crazy about Tiger’s courage playing with a boo boo I kept waiting for someone to mention how this pales in comparison to what Babe accomplished in 1954. Of course they did not at Torrey, or at Bethpage. Do I have anything against Tiger?, well a bit, but most of it is for his on course behavior, the cursing , club throwing, and having a classless thug for a caddy. I have much more against Johnny Miller and the ceaseless media chorus of sycophantic praise for everything Tiger does. Winning the U.S. Open on a broken leg is neat.  Winning the U.S. Open while wearing a bag and dying is true courage.

“Babe also waged a personal battle against colon cancer. Diagnosed in 1953, she underwent surgery and returned to the LPGA in 1954.  Upon her comeback, she won her third U.S. Women’s Open at Salem Country Club, in Peabody, Mass., and proceeded to win her first and only Vare Trophy in that same year.”

The Best Kept Secret – Congrats Yani Tseng

March 15, 2010

Shhh, there was a huge ladies’ tournament this weekend. Don’t tell a soul.  The trouble that ESPN and the Golf Channel go to ignoring ladies golf is mind boggling. There is no mention of Yani’s victory anywhere on the Golf Channel front page, it is the GOLF channel,  and they don’t even care.

The thing is my fellow gentlemen golfers, we can learn a lot more watching the ladies than we ever can watching Camillo hit a 200 yard 8 iron.
